The local BioEYES program, which is led by the University of Utah’s Dr. Judith Neugebauer and John Anderson, taught more than 2,100 kids in 87 classrooms last year. Myriad employees volunteered a total of 47 hours in 29 classrooms, which means one-third of the students were able to meet a Myriad employee! “We are proud to support high quality STEM learning programs like Project BioEYES, which improves our communities, enhances the performance of our workforce and ensures our global competitiveness,” said Mark C. Capone, president and CEO, Myriad Genetics. “Through our volunteer programs, we have the ability to inspire a love of learning and the next generation of scientists and leaders.” According to Dr. Neugebauer, the Myriad volunteers were well received and made a positive difference in children’s’ lives. Below is some of the feedback from students and teachers. Mark Capone presenting certificate of appreciation to several Myriad employees. Students • “The most important thing to me was seeing the zebrafish in the microscopes. It was really cool to see them up close and see how they are physically. I highly do see myself as a scientist now.” -7th grade student, Northwest Middle School. • “The most important thing that I learned is, basically ANY person can be a scientist.” -5th grade student, North Star Elementary. Teachers • “Hands-on, engaging science that models real-life research is the best type of science for teaching. BioEYES nailed it!” – Jen Carver, Mountain View 5th grade. • “It was thoughtful, hands-on and a lot of fun! And, such a unique experience for my kids.” – Carrie Crowe, Newman 2nd grade.
