Sometimes a mammogram isn’t enough

What if you could do more to understand your risk of breast cancer? Myriad’s MyRisk® Hereditary Cancer Test can help identify hereditary cancer risks and empower you and your provider to take action for your health today and into the future.

Why is genetic testing important?

Hereditary cancer testing is a type of genetic test. It looks for genetic changes linked to a higher chance of developing certain cancers, like breast cancer. These genetic changes can be passed down in families. Hereditary cancer testing can give you and your healthcare provider important information to help manage your breast health.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much will this cost?

Because we work with most major insurance companies, 9 out of 10 patients have no cost to them2. However, for those paying out of pocket, we provide cost estimates up front, so you know your costs before you commit. Financial assistance is also available to those who qualify. For further cost questions, visit our Costs & Process page.

  • Why does a doctor need to order this for me?

Unlike recreational genetic tests, MyRisk® is a medical grade test that requires a healthcare provider’s signature to initiate testing. If you don’t have a healthcare provider or would prefer to test from the comfort of your home, consider our Virtual Care services which connect you to a genetic counselor who will help you to submit your test sample.

  • What are the potential outcomes of the test and their impact on me?

Every results report is unique to the individual and provides an individualized risk estimate. Moreover, MyRisk produces personalized care plans that providers can use to help patients manage their risk. The plans can recommend a wide range of proactive options from risk reduction strategies to additional screenings.

  • Should I test with MyRisk if I have already had cancer?

Hereditary cancer testing can give you and your healthcare provider necessary information to help manage your hereditary risk before the onset of cancer or before a second cancer has a chance to develop. Even if you have been diagnosed and treated in the past, MyRisk can still inform your future cancer risk.

Testing could also be beneficial for discussing risks with your family members.

  • What is a Tyrer-Cuzick score?

Tyrer-Cuzick is a calculation used to estimate a person’s chance of developing breast cancer. It looks at your family history of cancer and other personal risk factors. If your chance of developing breast cancer in your lifetime is calculated to be 20% or greater, you may benefit from extra breast cancer screening.

If you take the MyRisk Test, a Tyrer-Cuzick score may be included. If your score is >20%, you'll be given a summary of medical care options to discuss with your healthcare providers.

  • Can the MyRisk team determine if I have cancer?

MyRisk does not diagnose cancer. It is a test to evaluate your hereditary risk of developing 11 types of cancer. Myriad representatives are unable to provide medical advice or help diagnose any symptoms and recommend consulting with your healthcare provider.

  • When will I receive my results?

Average turnaround time is within 14 days of sample submission.
