Learn how genetic testing can help with your cancer journey and how to talk to your provider about your testing options.
A cancer diagnosis opens many questions about the right treatment decisions. Genetic testing can bring important health details to light so you and your provider can make informed, confident choices for a treatment plan tailored to you. We’re here to help you start that conversation with your provider and navigate complex treatment decisions.
Genetic testing is a vital component of cancer treatment for two reasons. First, it can help your provider identify potential treatment options based on your unique genetic markers. Second, genetic testing can also benefit your family members by identifying if they are at an increased cancer risk, helping you and your family members take action to screen for cancers before they develop.
Based on the type of cancer you have, genetic testing can help guide your treatment options and improve your outcomes. Results from certain types of tests can indicate if you have a change in your DNA that is related to your cancer and/or increases your risk substantially for future cancers. For other types of genetic tests for cancer, results can indicate if there are features in your tumor (known as biomarkers) that might guide your provider to consider or not consider certain types of treatment.
A germline (inherited) biomarker alteration affects your family’s risk of developing certain cancers. Parents, siblings and children have a 50% chance of having the same alterations. Knowing if your relatives carry a gene alteration can allow them to make more informed decisions to reduce their cancer risk. Or if they test negative, it can bring peace of mind.
